In 2007, 8 Highland based cultural co-ordinators received funding from the Scottish Arts Council to provide arts projects for children on a theme of ‘Heritage’. The Highland Print Studio in Inverness worked in partnership with the co-ordinators to provide a range of activities for each area that made use of the facilities they offer.
Christine Russell, the cultural co-ordinator for Caithness schools enlisted the local talents of Nan Bethune (historical ethnologist), Esmee Duncan (Canisbay Kirk) and Joanne B Kaar (artist) to help P6 & P7 of Canisbay Primary school along with acting head teacher, Rhona Moodie to produce a series of illustrated books on events which unfolded in the landscape to be seen from their school. John McNaught from the Highland Print Studio brought all of this together using digital imaging techniques. The books were placed inside display cases made by local woodworker, Fred Haughton. One set of books will stay in Canisbay Primary School. An identical set was presented to Muriel Murray, Chairwoman of the Castletown Heritage Trust for them to be on public display on the Castlehill Centre, Castletown, Caithness. The books are accordion folded, each measuring 144cm x 18cm when opened out flat.
