Inspiration

Particular materials and techniques chosen for construction, the size of my ‘books’ and their content are often related to specific sites, use local material and explore traditional cultures.

Binding techniques are inventive rather than traditional and often include found objects. Many are not ‘books’ in the traditional sense, but artifacts perhaps like something washed up on the shore or found in the peat bog.

Colour, texture, pattern and mark making using hand stitch are all important elements in my work. Pages are made from a variety of papers, both hand and machine made, incorporating decorative techniques I’ve learnt while in Taiwan including seal stone carving and book box making combined with western techniques such as embossing, watercuts, watermarks, silkpaper making, paste paper. Digital photography is also important as I document my paper object on site as if they were archaeological finds.
